Earn your certificate

If flying is your dream, earning your Private Pilot Certificate is the first step! This certificate will allow you to operate small single engine aircraft in good weather and carry passengers. For many aviators, this is the first achievement towards a career in aviation!

Private Pilot Eligibility Requirements:

  • Read, speak, write, and understand English.

  • Obtain at least a third-class medical certificate.

  • Be at least 16 years old to fly solo.

  • Be at least 17 years old to receive your private pilot certificate.

Private Pilot Aeronautical Knowledge Requirements:

  • Complete an approved Ground School program (in-person or online) and pass the Federal Aviation Administration Private Pilot - Airplane written exam.

Private Pilot Aeronautical Experience Requirements:

  • 40 hours flight time (minimum)

    • 20 hours flight training (minimum)

    • 10 hours solo flight (minimum)

Finally, you must pass a practical exam with an FAA Aviation Safety Inspector (ASI) or Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE).

Most students require approximately 50-60 hours to feel confident to pass the Federal Aviation Administration Practical Exam (Ground and Flight Test). The pace at which you accomplish this goal varies from person to person, with the average time from your first lesson to becoming a certificated pilot around 4 months.
